TL;DR: Yes, World of Warcraft: Forever has built-in controller support on PC and Mac, but it's still labeled Alpha. To turn it on, go to Esc → Options → Gameplay → Gamepad (Alpha) and tick Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha). An Xbox controller works best. Lower the two stick thresholds from 0.6 and 0.5 to about 0.3 and turn on Show Input Prompts.
World of Warcraft: Forever is the first version of WoW with native gamepad support, so no addon is needed. Blizzard's official gamepad guide says it supports "all XInput-compatible controllers" and shows Xbox and PlayStation button icons. You can move, target, cast, loot and navigate most menus from the pad. Typing in chat still needs a keyboard, and Blizzard calls the feature a "functional beta".
WoW Forever launched on November 4 at 3 p.m. PT and is included in a regular WoW subscription. Below you'll find how to enable the gamepad, the full default layout, how the 84 ability slots work, the settings worth changing and which controllers work. Data as of November 2026, launch build. Does WoW Forever have controller support?
Yes, on PC only. WoW Forever runs on Windows and macOS, and the gamepad mode is a PC feature, not a console port. Xbox Wire's hands-on calls it "Gamepad (Alpha)" and says nothing about an Xbox console release. Blizzard hasn't announced a PlayStation or Xbox version of WoW Forever either.
Alpha means three things in practice. Not every window has gamepad prompts yet. Bags and some menus are still being reworked. Some prompts still want a mouse, per Warcraft Tavern's controller guide. Keyboard and mouse keep working with the Gamepad UI on, so you can switch mid-session.
How to enable the controller in WoW Forever
You can switch from either the character select screen or in-game:
- In-game: press Esc → Options → Gameplay → Gamepad (Alpha).
- Login or character select: press Menu → Options → System → Gamepad (Alpha).
- Tick Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha). The action bars switch to the gamepad layout, and the button icons change to match your controller.
- Turn on Show Input Legend. A control legend appears in the top-left corner and updates as you press buttons.
If the checkbox is on but nothing responds, Windows may not see the pad as an XInput device. The fixes are in the controllers section below.
WoW Forever controller layout: every default button
Blizzard describes the controls using Xbox names. The PlayStation column uses the standard Cross / Circle / Square / Triangle mapping from Warcraft Tavern. On a Nintendo-layout pad, A and B are swapped, and so are X and Y.
| Xbox | PlayStation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Left Stick | Left Stick | Move |
| Right Stick | Right Stick | Camera |
| A | Cross | Jump (fixed) |
| B | Circle | Back: close menus, clear target (fixed) |
| X | Square | Interact; starts attacking in combat (fixed) |
| Y | Triangle | Inspect / context menu (fixed) |
| LB | L1 | Friendly target |
| RB | R1 | Hostile target |
| LT / RT / LT + RT (hold) | L2 / R2 / L2 + R2 | Switch to action bar 2, 3 or 4 |
| D-pad | D-pad | Four ability slots on every bar |
| Menu | Options | Main Menu (radial: Spellbook, Bags, Professions) |
| View | Not confirmed | Change Focus Frame |
| Hold Right Stick | Hold R3 | Ping wheel: Attack, Warning, On My Way, Assist |
| LB + RB + Right Stick | L1 + R1 + Right Stick | Zoom camera in / out |
| LB + RB + L3 | L1 + R1 + L3 | Center camera |
| LB + RB + D-pad Left/Right | L1 + R1 + D-pad Left/Right | Switch action bar set (1 of 3) |
| LB + RB + B | L1 + R1 + Circle | Open Backpack |
| LB + RB + Up | L1 + R1 + Up | Quest Tracker |
| LB + RB + Down | L1 + R1 + Down | Chat |
| LB + RB + Y | L1 + R1 + Triangle | Manage Buffs |
Most bindings come from Blizzard's guide. The ping wheel comes from Xbox Wire, and Center Camera from Warcraft Tavern. Blizzard doesn't say which PlayStation button replaces View. The "gamepad zoom out" question has a simple answer: hold both bumpers and push the right stick back.
How combat works on a gamepad: triggers, bars and 84 slots
Each action bar holds 8 buttons, the D-pad plus A/B/X/Y. Holding LT, RT or LT + RT swaps to another bar, and releasing the triggers brings you back to the default one. On the default bar, the four face buttons are locked to Jump, Back, Interact and Inspect. That leaves 28 customizable slots per set. With three sets on LB + RB + D-pad, you get 84 slots in total (Blizzard, Warcraft Tavern).
| Bar | Hold | Usable slots | Blizzard's Mage example (D-pad Up) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (default) | nothing | 4 (D-pad only) | Polymorph |
| 2 | LT | 8 | Fireball |
| 3 | RT | 8 | Frostbolt |
| 4 | LT + RT | 8 | Blizzard |
| Per set | 28 | ||
| 3 sets | 84 | ||
Put your main rotation on the LT and RT bars and keep the D-pad for cooldowns and utility. Your right thumb rests on the face buttons, so the 8-slot trigger bars are the fastest to reach. The default bar only has the D-pad free, which suits Polymorph, a bandage or a mount. Use the second and third sets for food, buffs and professions. Switching sets mid-fight needs three buttons, so don't put anything you need in combat there.
Targeting: hold a bumper
Default targeting is a kind of action targeting: spells go to whatever you're facing. Holding a bumper switches the face buttons to targeting actions, per Warcraft Tavern's guide:
| Button | Hold RB (enemy mode) | Hold LB (friendly mode) |
|---|---|---|
| Right Stick | Aim at an enemy | Aim at an ally |
| D-pad | None | Move through party / raid frames |
| A | Last hostile target | Target yourself |
| B | Assist (target's target) | Assist (target's target) |
| X | Ranged Attack | Target your pet |
| Y | Cycle raid markers (Skull → Star) | Cycle raid markers (Star → Skull) |
Healers should learn LB + A early, because it's the only way to target yourself on a pad. To bind spells without a mouse, press Menu → Spellbook, highlight a spell, press X for Bind Mode, then press the button combo you want.
Best WoW Forever gamepad settings
Everything below sits in Options → Gamepad (Alpha). Blizzard groups it into Camera, HUD Modifier, Frame Focus Style, Action Bars, Targeting and Raid Targeting Options. Defaults are from Warcraft Tavern.
| Setting | Default | Set to | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back Pedal Stick Threshold | 0.6 | 0.3 | WoW has no analog movement. Below the threshold you walk, so a lower value means full speed sooner |
| Stick Run Threshold | 0.5 | 0.3 | Same reason: walking in combat is almost never what you want |
| Show Input Prompts | Off | On | Shows button icons on the active bars |
| Show Input Legend | On | On until you know the layout | Context legend in the top-left corner |
| Follow Camera | Off | Off | Auto-pitch while running can cause motion sickness |
| Horizontal / Vertical Speed | Not confirmed | High | Faster turns; LB + RB + L3 recenters |
| Turn Player With Camera | When moving, in combat or casting | Keep default | Lets you turn to a moving target without stepping |
| Frame Focus Style | Gold | Gold | Blue and Black are hard to tell from inactive frames |
| Hover Mode (Raid Targeting) | Off | Off for DPS, On for healers | Off keeps your enemy target while you heal or buff allies |
| Compact Action Bar | Not confirmed | On (TV or handheld) | Frees screen space, per Xbox Wire |
The two thresholds work like a deadzone setting. They decide how far you push the stick (0 to 1) before your character switches from walking to running. To see where 0.3 falls on your stick, open our online gamepad tester and push the left stick about a third of the way. If the stick doesn't rest at 0.00, your pad has drift, and lowering the threshold will make your character creep forward on their own. Our guide to inner vs outer deadzone explains the difference.
On a TV or handheld, open Edit Mode as well. Shrink the chat frame and move the player and target frames to the bottom of the screen, which Xbox Wire's writer recommends for couch play.
Which controllers work with WoW Forever
Blizzard names one requirement: XInput. Anything Windows sees as an Xbox controller works natively, and other pads need a translation layer.
| Controller | Native support | Button icons | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X|S, One) | Yes (XInput) | Xbox | Best pick. Xbox Wire says every on-screen icon maps exactly |
| Xbox Elite Series 2 | Yes | Xbox | Back paddles are invisible to Windows; map them to keys or use an addon |
| DualSense / DualSense Edge / DualShock 4 | Not confirmed without Steam Input or DS4Windows | PlayStation (built in) | Blizzard ships PlayStation icons; on pads with supported lighting, the light turns red for Horde and blue for Alliance |
| 8BitDo pads | Yes, in X-input mode | Xbox | Switch the pad to X-input before pairing |
| Switch Pro Controller | No | Nintendo via addon | Needs Steam Input; the A/B and X/Y labels are swapped |
| Steam Deck | Not officially supported | Xbox | Works through Proton and Steam Input; see the WoW Forever on Steam Deck guide |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Not officially supported | Xbox | Xbox Wire got it running using the touchscreen to reach the toggle |
Paddle and Nintendo-icon notes come from the Controller Forever addon page. For a DualSense, the reliable route today is Steam Input or our DS4Windows setup guide. If Windows doesn't see an Xbox pad at all, start with Xbox controller not working on PC.
Native Gamepad UI vs ConsolePort and other addons
Before WoW Forever, the only way to play WoW on a controller was ConsolePort. Its latest build on CurseForge is 3.3.13 (October 30, 2026), and full Forever support is not confirmed by its developer. The addons built for Forever extend the native Gamepad UI instead of replacing it. Controller Forever requires Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha) to be on.
| Feature | Native Gamepad (Alpha) | Controller Forever addon |
|---|---|---|
| Ability slots | 84 (3 sets × 28) | Any bind on any button and layer, plus extra bars |
| Rebinding A/B/X/Y | No, fixed on the default bar | Yes |
| LB / RB, L3 / R3 as ability buttons | No | Yes |
| Back paddles | Not used | Yes (Elite, DualSense Edge, Steam Deck grips) |
| Tab-style targeting | No (hold-bumper modes) | Tap RT / LT for next enemy / friend |
| Chat without keyboard | No | Quick Chat tiles and on-screen keyboard |
| Nintendo icons | No (Xbox and PlayStation only) | Yes |
Play your first 10–20 levels on the native Gamepad UI. Add Controller Forever when the fixed face buttons start to annoy you, usually once a class has more than 20 abilities. If buttons register in Steam but not in WoW, the problem sits between Steam Input and the game. Our fix for controller works in Steam but not in game covers it.
