Testing Controls on SteamOS

SteamOS allows running browser diagnostics directly inside the Steam Deck Gaming Mode (via Web Browser shortcut) or in Desktop Mode using Google Chrome or Firefox. Steam Deck rear grip buttons pass through standard XInput/Gamepad API mappings when configured as generic buttons in your Steam Controller layout settings.

How to test Steam Deck controls

Testing both trackpads

Glide your thumbs across the left and right square trackpads to verify linear capacitive X/Y tracking and haptic click actuation.

Steam Deck trackpads serve as mouse emulators and radial touch menus. Our visualizer displays raw coordinate tracking so you can detect dead spots or surface calibration errors.

Steam Deck stick drift

Steam Deck thumbsticks use standard potentiometer assemblies on replaceable daughterboards. Monitor resting stick center values on this page to detect early potentiometer wear.

Early Steam Deck LCD models frequently developed stick drift after extended use. If resting stick offsets exceed Âą0.05, you can either adjust deadzones in SteamOS controller settings or install drop-in Hall Effect stick modules.

Rear grip buttons

Press rear grip paddles L4, L5, R4, and R5 to ensure mechanical click registration and spring-back action.

In SteamOS, rear grip buttons map to standard extended gamepad indices (Buttons 16–19) when configured as generic buttons in your controller layout template.

Deck LCD vs OLED differences

Steam Deck OLED models feature revised thumbstick modules with wider thumbstick caps and improved deadzone centering compared to earlier LCD revisions.
