What causes mouse double clicking
Mechanical mouse switches rely on a curved metal spring leaf that closes electrical contacts. Over millions of clicks, metal fatigue and surface oxidation cause the leaf to vibrate on impact, sending multiple electrical pulses.
This physical bouncing phenomenon is known as switch chatter. When contacts become oxidized or lose spring tension, the duration of the mechanical bounce exceeds the mouse firmware's debounce filter, registering an accidental second click.

Intentional human double-clicks take at least 80ms to 120ms between clicks. Repeat clicks registering under 40ms are physical switch chatter defects.
