Why Polling Rate & Jitter Matter for Competitive Gaming
In competitive esports titles (Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Fortnite), a controller's report frequency dictates how frequently the game engine receives micro-adjustments from your thumbsticks. Standard controllers traditionally report at 125Hz (8.0ms) or 250Hz (4.0ms), while competitive pads and overclocked DualSense controllers can reach 1000Hz (1.0ms).
However, raw Hz is only half the story: Jitter (the inconsistency in packet arrival times) can cause aim shudder and dropped inputs. A steady 500Hz stream with 0.2ms jitter provides a much smoother tracking feel than a fluctuating 1000Hz stream with 3.5ms jitter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Over USB on PC: PS5 DualSense defaults to 250Hz (can be overclocked to 1000Hz). PS4 DualShock 4 reports at 250Hz over USB (1000Hz over Bluetooth). Official Xbox Series X|S pads report at 125Hz (8ms) over standard XInput.
Our script samples high-precision timestamps using performance.now() whenever a genuine analog coordinate or button bitmask changes state, computing the true hardware packet interval delta.
