Short answer: plan on about 25 hours for the main story of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2, 30â35 hours if you pick up side quests along the way, and 40â55 hours for 100%. Master Quest is not in the game, so there is no second quest to add on top.
The Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake lands in the same range as the 1998 original. Reviewers report a 20â25 hour campaign, and the one critic who cleared every collectible logged 55 hours. HowLongToBeat players put the Nintendo 64 version at 27 hours and the 3DS version at 25, and nothing in the Switch 2 rebuild adds a new dungeon to stretch that.
Data as of November 6, 2026, one day after launch. HowLongToBeat already has a page for the remake, but no player times yet, so the numbers below combine review playtimes with long-run averages for the older versions. We'll swap in real Switch 2 averages once enough players submit runs. If you're still learning the new jump and dash buttons, our Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake controls guide covers every input.
How long is Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake?
Go in expecting 25 hours. That's where the review consensus, the 3DS average and the N64 average all meet. Faster movement takes a bit off the old runtime, and voiced cutscenes add some back.
| Playstyle | Expected time | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Main story, first-timer | 25 hours | All required dungeons and songs, Ganon's Castle, little detouring |
| Main story, returning player | about 20 hours | Same route, but you remember the puzzles and item order |
| Main story + side content | 30â35 hours | Epona, bottles, Great Fairies, some Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas, the fishing pond |
| 100% completion | 40â55 hours | All 36 Pieces of Heart, all 100 Gold Skulltulas, every upgrade, Hall of Fallen Foes rematches |
The 20-hour figure for returning players comes from Wccftech's review, which puts the campaign at "around 20 hours", or about 25 for someone new to Ocarina avoiding guides. The 100% ceiling comes from GamesRadar+, whose reviewer finished "absolutely everything" in 55 hours. A completionist working from a checklist will land closer to 40.
How many hours reviewers needed
Review playtimes are the only Switch 2 numbers that exist right now. They cluster tightly for the story and spread out for completion, depending on how much optional content each critic chased.
| Source | Reported time | What it covered |
|---|---|---|
| Wccftech | ~20 h (25 for newcomers), ~30 h with collectibles | Campaign, then Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas |
| Ground News review roundup | 25 h | Main story, one reviewer's run |
| Dexerto | "20+ hour adventure" | Main story |
| GamesRadar+ | 55 h | Everything, including every collectible |
| Insider Gaming | ~20 h main, up to 30 h for 100% | Summary of review playtimes |
| G2A News | 25â30 / 30â35 / 37â40+ h | Pre-launch estimate based on older versions |
Insider Gaming's "30 hours for 100%" is the low outlier. Wccftech reached about 30 hours with Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas but didn't claim a full clear, and the remake moves some collectibles, so treat 30 as a best case for a veteran.
Is the Ocarina of Time remake longer than the original?
Roughly the same length, possibly a little shorter for the story. Here are the HowLongToBeat averages for every earlier release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
| Version | Main story | Main + sides | Completionist | Players polled (main) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 (1998) | 27 h | 30ÂŊ h | 37ÂŊ h | 502 |
| Ocarina of Time 3D (2011) | 25 h | 31ÂŊ h | 38ÂŊ h | 694 |
| Master Quest | 20ÂŊ h | 28 h | 33ÂŊ h | 34 |
| Switch 2 remake (2026) | no data yet | no data yet | no data yet | 0 |
Several changes in the remake cut time:
- Jump and dash buttons. Link no longer auto-jumps, and holding the roll button lets him run, so crossing Hyrule Field on foot is quicker.
- Fewer timers and clearer secrets. Wccftech reports that bombable walls are "much more obvious" and almost all of the original's timed challenges are no longer timed.
- Collectible tracking on the map. The map now shows how many Gold Skulltulas you've found in each area (VGC), and the post-game map marks where you're still missing collectibles (GamesRadar+). Both cut the end-of-game cleanup that inflated N64 completionist times.
And a few that add time:
- Voiced, longer cutscenes. G2A notes expanded dialogue and voice acting throughout.
- Moved collectibles and reworked rooms. GamesRadar+ confirms that not every Heart Piece or Gold Skulltula is where it was in 1998, so veterans can't go fully on autopilot.
- Hall of Fallen Foes. Boss rematches with a timer, covered below.
How many dungeons are in the Ocarina of Time remake?
Twelve dungeon-style areas, 11 of them required. The remake keeps the original lineup and doesn't add a new dungeon. Its new content is the Hall of Fallen Foes rather than extra temples (producer Eiji Aonuma via BigGo).
| # | Dungeon | Link's age | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inside the Deku Tree | Child | Main dungeon |
| 2 | Dodongo's Cavern | Child | Main dungeon |
| 3 | Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly | Child | Main dungeon |
| 4 | Forest Temple | Adult | Main dungeon |
| 5 | Fire Temple | Adult | Main dungeon |
| 6 | Ice Cavern | Adult | Mini-dungeon (required) |
| 7 | Water Temple | Adult | Main dungeon |
| 8 | Bottom of the Well | Child | Mini-dungeon (required) |
| 9 | Shadow Temple | Adult | Main dungeon |
| 10 | Spirit Temple | Child and Adult | Main dungeon |
| 11 | Ganon's Castle | Adult | Final dungeon |
| 12 | Gerudo Training Ground | Adult | Optional |
The child dungeons are short and mostly teach you the tools. Most of the 25 hours goes into the adult temples. The Water Temple used to be the run-killer, but GamesRadar+ says none of the remake's dungeons feel grueling, "not even the dreaded Water Temple", thanks to clearer visuals and navigation. No outlet has published per-dungeon times for the Switch 2 version yet.
What counts for 100% in Zelda: Ocarina of Time?
Nintendo hasn't defined an official completion percentage for the remake. These are the countable items completionists track:
| Collectible | Total | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces of Heart | 36 | Four make a Heart Container, so 9 extra hearts. Full list in GameWith's remake guide; some have moved since 1998 |
| Gold Skulltulas | 100 | Same total as N64 and 3DS, with new reward tiers (VGC) |
| Empty Bottles | 4 | Three as a child; the last one needs all 10 Big Poes as an adult (VGC) |
| Big Poes | 10 | Hunted on horseback in Hyrule Field; gyro aiming helps here |
| Hall of Fallen Foes rematches | not confirmed | Boss list and reward count not published yet |
Gold Skulltula rewards changed in the remake. Here is the full ladder, per VGC:
| Tokens | Reward |
|---|---|
| 10 | Adult's Wallet |
| 20 | Echo Gem |
| 30 | Giant's Wallet |
| 40 | Bombchu |
| 50 | Piece of Heart |
| 100 | Unlimited Gold Rupees |
Beyond the numbers, a full run also means the Biggoron's Sword trading sequence, the Happy Mask Shop quest, every Great Fairy upgrade and the fishing pond prizes. Those side quests are why "main + sides" sits 5â10 hours above the story-only time.
Does the Hall of Fallen Foes add playtime?
A few hours at most. Nintendo's overview trailer showed the Hall of Fallen Foes as an interactive bestiary: statues of defeated enemies with short descriptions, plus boss rematches run against a timer, similar to the Boss Challenge mode in Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo Wire). Some outlets call it the "Hall of Fallen Heroes", but most trailer coverage uses "Foes".
Clearing each boss once adds little. Chasing faster clear times is where the hours go, and that's open-ended. Timed fights punish loose inputs, so if Link drifts sideways while you're lining up a Hookshot shot, check your sticks in our gamepad tester before blaming yourself. The Switch 2 Joy-Con drift guide covers the fixes.
Is Master Quest included in the remake?
No. Master Quest isn't in the Switch 2 version at launch, and there's no hard mode either (games.gg review). Producer Eiji Aonuma told IGN that the team wants to "leave that possibility open" but wouldn't announce anything specific (BigGo). If it does arrive as DLC, the Master Quest averages above suggest about 20 more hours for the story.
The remake also has only one save file, which GamesRadar+ lists as a con. Starting New Game for a second run wipes your 100% file, so finish everything you want on the first playthrough.
