How to test your touchpad

Connect your DualSense or DualShock 4 via USB, open this page in Chrome or Edge, click Connect via WebHID, and glide your fingers across the touchpad surface to view real-time X/Y tracking coordinates.

Standard HTML5 Gamepad APIs only detect the mechanical click of the touchpad (Button 17). Our WebHID engine reads raw capacitive sensor packets (Report 0x01 on USB), rendering two independent touch contact points with continuous trajectory lines.

Click vs surface: two separate things

The physical touchpad click is an underlying dome tactile switch, while the touch surface is a two-finger capacitive digitizer. They operate on separate circuits and can fail independently.

A controller can have a perfectly functioning mechanical click while the capacitive touch surface is entirely dead due to a torn ribbon cable or liquid ingress. Conversely, the surface may track flawlessly while the physical click fails to actuate due to physical debris under the plastic frame.

What a healthy touchpad looks like

A healthy touchpad tracks smooth, uninterrupted coordinate paths across its entire 1920x1080 digitizer resolution, accurately detects two fingers simultaneously, and immediately clears touch contacts on release.

When dragging your finger from corner to corner, the coordinate display should scale linearly without jitter, sudden coordinate jumps, or dead zones near the top and bottom borders.

Common touchpad faults

The most frequent touchpad failures are phantom ghost touches (random coordinate flickering without contact), dead zones caused by damaged flex ribbon cables, and non-responsive second-finger detection.

Ghost touches typically occur when moisture, conductive sweat, or static electricity build up across the capacitive layer. In competitive games where the touchpad gestures control maps or inventory menus, ghost touches can disrupt gameplay unexpectedly.

Why other testers cannot show this

Generic gamepad testers rely strictly on the standard W3C Gamepad API, which has no specification or properties for multi-touch digitizer coordinates.

To read surface coordinates, a web application must communicate directly with the gamepad's raw HID interface via the WebHID API, parsing proprietary Sony input report byte streams that unpack 12-bit X and Y touch position registers.
