TL;DR: GTA 6 pre-load starts November 10 on PS5 (midnight local time) and Xbox Series X|S (12 a.m. GMT). It needs up to 212 GB of free space and gives no early access. The game unlocks at midnight local time on November 19, with New Zealand first.
Launch is less than two weeks away, so the useful questions are practical ones: when can you start downloading, how much space do you need, and what time does the game actually unlock where you live. Data as of November 6, 2026, from Rockstar's support page and the console makers' own posts. For prices and editions, see our GTA 6 price and editions guide.
What is GTA 6 pre-load and when does it start?
Pre-load lets you download the game before launch so it is ready to play the moment it unlocks. According to Rockstar's Pre-Load FAQ (updated November 3, 2026), digital pre-load on PS5 begins at midnight local time on November 10, and on Xbox Series X|S it begins globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10. The PlayStation Blog says pre-orders can pre-download from that point. Rockstar's page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no mention of PC.
Can you play GTA 6 early? Not officially. Pre-load does not give early access, according to VICE's report on the PlayStation announcement. The only head start is geographic: the game unlocks at midnight local time, so players in earlier time zones get it first.
| Region | Xbox pre-load starts | PS5 pre-load starts |
|---|---|---|
| US Pacific | Nov 9, 4 p.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| US Eastern | Nov 9, 7 p.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| United Kingdom | Nov 10, 12 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| Central Europe | Nov 10, 1 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| India | Nov 10, 5:30 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| Japan | Nov 10, 9 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| Sydney | Nov 10, 11 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| New Zealand | Nov 10, 1 p.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
Xbox times come from Pure Xbox and KeenGamer; PS5 times are Rockstar's "midnight local" rule applied to each zone. Every time is local to that region.
How big is the GTA 6 download?
Rockstar says pre-load needs up to 212 GB of free space "depending on your device." The same figure applies to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar gives no separate number for Series S. Clear a bit more than that: Pure Xbox advises keeping extra room in case the size changes.
Your real wait depends on your connection. These are theoretical best cases at full line speed for 212 GB (decimal), so expect longer in practice.
| Connection speed | Best-case download time |
|---|---|
| 50 Mbps | about 9 hours 25 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | about 4 hours 43 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | about 1 hour 34 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | about 57 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | about 28 minutes |
If you are on 100 Mbps or slower, start on the first day. Waiting for launch day means being offline from the game for hours while everyone else is playing.
What time does GTA 6 unlock on November 19?
Rockstar confirmed the game releases at midnight local time in each region, per VICE. KeenGamer compiled the unlock times from PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings, which is why a few multi-time-zone countries start on November 18 for some players. Always trust the countdown on your own console over any table.
| Region | Unlock time (local) | UTC |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 18, 11:00 |
| Sydney | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 18, 13:00 |
| Japan / South Korea | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 18, 15:00 |
| India | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 18, 18:30 |
| Central Europe | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 18, 23:00 |
| United Kingdom | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 19, 00:00 |
| Brazil | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 19, 03:00 |
| US Eastern | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 19, 05:00 |
| US Pacific | Nov 18, 9 p.m. | Nov 19, 05:00 |
| Mexico City | Nov 19, 12 a.m. | Nov 19, 06:00 |
One thing worth checking: the store listings show all four US time zones unlocking at the same moment (midnight Eastern), so Pacific players would get it at 9 p.m. on November 18. If Rockstar applies "midnight local" strictly, Pacific would unlock three hours later. The console countdown will settle it.
How to pre-load GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox, step by step
- Free up space. Clear at least 212 GB. Sony links PS5 storage-expansion options in its pre-download post.
- Pre-order the game (or redeem your physical code) on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store.
- Turn on automatic downloads. Rockstar says PS5 needs auto-downloads enabled and the console on or in Rest Mode. Xbox needs automatic updates enabled and the console on or in Sleep mode.
- Wait for the start time in the table above and let the download finish. Rockstar's page does not list step-by-step menus, so follow your console's own download queue.
- Do nothing else on launch day except check the countdown. The game unlocks at its midnight, not when the download ends.
How to buy GTA 6 as a gift
Xbox is straightforward. Per Xbox Wire, open the game in the Microsoft Store on console, select the gift-wrap icon, pick a friend or enter an email, and pay. For console gifts the recipient must be in the same country. Xbox Wire does not say whether pre-orders can be gifted, so check the store page for GTA 6 before you buy.
PS5 has no direct gifting button for games, according to Dot Esports. The usual workarounds are a PlayStation Store gift card, which works as credit for anything in the store, or a physical copy. Match the card amount to the edition price, and note that gift cards cannot buy physical products.
Is the physical copy different for pre-load?
The boxed version has no disc, only a download code, according to Shacknews. KeenGamer reports physical buyers can pre-load from November 12, after redeeming the code, and that the physical edition gets no early unlock: it follows the same November 19 schedule. Treat the November 12 date as reported rather than confirmed by Rockstar.
What if GTA 6 pre-load is slow or won't start?
Rockstar's support page links to platform troubleshooting pages but gives no specific fixes, so start with the basics that match its requirements. Check that you still have more than 212 GB free, that automatic downloads or updates are on, and that the console is powered on or in Rest/Sleep mode rather than fully off. If it still fails, Rockstar says its support is available 24/7 through the Pre-Load FAQ page.
