The Steam Deck has one big advantage over the PS5, Xbox, and Switch when it comes to stick drift: SteamOS. Valve built calibration tools, deadzone controls, and per-game input shaping directly into the operating system, so a Deck owner can fix or work around most drift without a screwdriver. And when software isn't enough, Valve mounted each thumbstick on its own modular board that unplugs like a component, no soldering required. iFixit has praised the Deck's repairability for exactly this reason.
None of that changes the underlying physics, though. Stock Deck thumbsticks on both the LCD and OLED models are potentiometer-based ALPS-style modules. A wiper slides across a resistive track, the track wears down, carbon dust lands on the contacts, and eventually your camera pans by itself while the Deck sits on the table. It happens to Decks the same way it happens to every other controller.

Step 0: confirm which input is actually drifting
The Deck has more input sources than any console: two sticks, two trackpads, and a gyro. Cursor creep that looks like stick drift is sometimes the gyro or a trackpad misbehaving, and people have opened their Decks to fix a stick that was never the problem.
Verify first. Press the Steam button, go to Settings > Controller > Calibration & Advanced Settings, and select Joysticks. The screen shows a live position readout for each stick. Take your thumbs off. A healthy stick snaps back to dead center; a drifting one rests off-center or jitters. 1. Update SteamOS and restart
Software drift on the Deck is not hypothetical. Early SteamOS builds had a documented deadzone calibration bug, and a Steam client update in March 2025 caused drift symptoms at the profile selection screen that Valve fixed with a patch a few weeks later. If your drift appeared right after an update, suspicion should fall on software first.
Press Steam > Settings > System > Check for Updates, install anything pending, and reboot fully rather than sleeping. Also test a second game before blaming hardware: drift in one title but not others points at that game's deadzone or sensitivity settings, not your stick.
2. Raise the joystick deadzone in SteamOS
Unlike the consoles, the Deck gives you a system-level deadzone slider. Settings > Controller > Calibration & Advanced Settings, then adjust the deadzone for the affected stick while watching the live visualizer. Increase it just until the resting jitter stays inside the deadzone circle, and stop there. The default sits somewhere around the low thousands on the internal scale; pushing it far past what you need makes small aiming movements feel dead and laggy, which is precisely why competitive players keep deadzones minimal. You can also set deadzones per game through Steam Input: in a game's controller layout, open the stick's behavior settings and configure a custom deadzone that applies only to that title. Handy when one twitchy game exposes drift the rest never show.

3. Recalibrate the thumbsticks
Calibration teaches the Deck where your stick's true center and range are. If the stored calibration has drifted from reality, or you've just installed replacement sticks, recalibrating can eliminate resting offset.
Valve has moved this tool around across SteamOS versions. Check Settings > Controller > Calibration & Advanced Settings first. On builds where the joystick calibration option isn't exposed in Game Mode, it can be run from Desktop Mode: switch via the power menu, open the Konsole terminal, and run the thumbstick_cal utility, following its prompts to center and rotate each stick. Recalibration is most effective for small, stable offsets. If the stick's resting point wanders from minute to minute, the potentiometer is shedding dust, and you need methods 4 or 5.
4. Clean the stick with compressed air, then contact cleaner
Handhelds live rough lives. Bags, couches, pockets, snack-adjacent gaming sessions. Debris under the stick's rubber skirt causes a real fraction of Deck drift.
Start non-invasively: with the Deck off, tilt the stick to one side and blow short bursts of compressed air into the gap around the base, rotating the stick as you go. Retest.
If the drift persists, escalate to electronic contact cleaner, quick-drying and plastic-safe (CRC QD Electronic Cleaner or WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner, never regular WD-40). Power off, lift the rubber skirt at the stick base with a toothpick, apply one short spray, work the stick in circles for 30 seconds, and let it dry 10-15 minutes before booting. The cleaner dissolves the conductive dust on the potentiometer track that causes phantom input. For a more thorough application, you can open the rear shell and treat the stick module directly, but try the closed-shell method first, especially if your Deck is under warranty, because Valve's warranty position on user-opened Decks has nuance: opening it isn't automatically disqualifying in the US and EU, but any damage you cause inside isn't covered.
Expect a contact cleaner fix to hold for a few months to a year. When applications stop lasting, the module is worn out, and it's replacement time.
5. Use Valve's RMA if you're under warranty
The Deck carries a one-year warranty in most regions (two years statutory in the EU). Drift within that window qualifies for RMA. Contact Steam Support from your account, describe the drift, and Valve will arrange repair or replacement. Turnaround is usually one to two weeks.
If you're inside warranty and the drift is bad, this beats DIY: it's free, and you're not risking a ribbon cable at your kitchen table. The usual caveat applies, though. Valve repairs with stock potentiometer sticks, so you're getting a reset, not immunity.
6. Replace the thumbstick module (the permanent fix)
This is where the Deck shines. Each thumbstick sits on its own small board connected by a ribbon cable. Replacement means removing the back shell (eight screws, four long and four short, pulling the microSD card first or you will snap it), lifting the board shield, disconnecting one ribbon cable, and unscrewing the module. Around 20-30 minutes, moderate difficulty, no soldering on most configurations.
Two decisions matter before you buy parts.
First, match your model and stick type. LCD and OLED Decks use different layouts, and early LCD units shipped with a thumbstick variant whose capacitive touch connection differs from later ones, so check which revision you have before ordering. Second, choose your replacement technology. Stock-style potentiometer modules cost about $15-20 a pair and will drift again in a year or two of heavy use. Hall effect and TMR modules from GuliKit and similar brands cost $25-40 and sense position magnetically, with no contact surfaces to wear, so drift from wear is off the table permanently. If you're opening the Deck anyway, the magnetic modules are the obvious buy. New modules often feel stiffer than your worn-out originals; that's normal and settles within a few weeks. After installation, recalibrate (step 3) so the Deck learns the new sticks' center points, since carrying over the old stick's calibration values can itself create phantom drift.
Keeping the new sticks alive longer
A few habits stretch stick lifespan noticeably on a handheld. Use a case or sleeve for transport, because bag lint is the number one debris source and the Deck's stick skirts are not sealed against it. Wipe around the stick bases occasionally with a barely damp cloth so oil and grit don't accumulate at the gap. And where a game supports it, lean on the trackpads or gyro for camera control; every hour of aiming you shift off the stick is wear the potentiometer never accumulates.
