Steam Deck 1010 (LCD) Thumbstick Replacement

Fix Stick Drift with OEM or Hall Effect Thumbstick Modules

Author
Difficulty3/5

The Steam Deck 1010 (LCD model) uses ALPS RKJXV analog stick modules identical to those in PlayStation and Xbox controllers. Drift develops over the same timeframe: 18-36 months of heavy use. The good news: Valve designed the Steam Deck with repairability in mind (iFixit partnership), and you can replace the stock sticks with GuliKit Hall Effect modules for permanent drift immunity. This guide covers both OEM and Hall Effect replacement.

Step-by-Step Replacement

Steam Deck Thumbstick Swap

Moderate difficulty. 20-30 minutes.

1

Step 1: Remove Back Shell

Remove all 8 Phillips screws from the back panel. Gently pry the back shell off starting from the top edge. The shell clips are tight; be patient.

2

Step 2: Disconnect Battery

Locate the battery connector ribbon cable. Use a spudger to disconnect it from the motherboard. Wait 10 seconds for capacitors to discharge.

3

Step 3: Remove the Metal Shield

Remove the screws holding the metal shield plate over the motherboard. Lift the shield off to expose the stick module connectors on the board.

4

Step 4: Disconnect Old Stick Module

Each stick module connects via a flat ribbon cable with a ZIF connector. Lift the lock tab, slide the old ribbon out. Remove the Phillips screws holding the stick module to the frame.

5

Step 5: Install New Module

Place the new module (OEM or Hall Effect) in the same position. Secure with screws. Slide the ribbon cable into the ZIF connector and lock the tab.

6

Step 6: Calibrate Hall Effect Sticks (If Applicable)

If you installed GuliKit Hall Effect sticks, go to Steam > Settings > Controller > Calibration & Advanced Settings. Run the calibration wizard for each stick. Hall Effect sticks require one-time calibration but never need recalibration after that.
