You put the controller down, and your character keeps walking. You take your thumb off the stick and the camera keeps panning. Maybe your car drifts left in every race, or your aim slides off target the moment you stop correcting it.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, this is stick drift: your controller is telling the game you're pushing the stick when you aren't. It's the most common way controllers fail, and it affects PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC pads alike.
But it isn't always drift, and that matters, because the fixes are completely different. Plenty of people have replaced a perfectly good controller when the actual problem was a game setting or a second controller they forgot was switched on. So before you spend anything, spend sixty seconds finding out what's really happening.
What stick drift actually is
Your analog sticks don't work like on/off buttons. They report a position on a scale, and the game reads that position continuously. When you let go, a healthy stick springs back to dead centre and reports zero.
Inside most controllers, that position is measured by a potentiometer: a small contact physically slides across a resistive strip, and where it sits determines the reading. The problem is that the contact and the strip are touching, so every stick movement wears them slightly. Over thousands of hours, the strip wears down and sheds fine conductive dust onto the contacts.
Once that happens, the sensor stops reporting a clean zero. It reports a small amount of movement that isn't there, and the game does exactly what it's told: it moves your character.
This is wear, not a defect in the sense of something going wrong unexpectedly. It's why drift tends to appear gradually and get worse, and why it hits controllers used for shooters first, since aiming demands constant fine stick movement.
Step 1: Work out which controller is doing it
Start here, because this is the single most overlooked cause and it costs nothing to check.
Consoles happily accept several controllers at once, and a second controller can be feeding input into your game without you realising. The classic version: an old controller with bad drift is switched on under a couch cushion, in a drawer, or behind the TV, quietly pushing your character forward. Another version is a controller with something resting on it, a book, a bag, a cat, physically holding a stick over.
So: turn off every controller except the one in your hands. On PS5, hold the PS button and select the option to turn off other controllers, or simply power them down individually. On Xbox, hold the Xbox button on each spare controller for about six seconds until it powers off.
Then test the game again. If the problem vanishes, you never had a drifting controller in your hands. You had a drifting controller somewhere else in the room.
This also explains a symptom that confuses people: movement that starts and stops seemingly at random. That's often another controller going to sleep and waking up, not your controller behaving erratically.
Step 2: Test the controller you're holding
Now check the controller itself, and do it outside of any game, because games apply their own settings on top of your input and will mislead you.
Connect your controller to a PC, Mac, or phone and open the stick drift test in a browser. USB is most reliable, though Bluetooth works. Press any button to wake the page, then set the controller down on a flat surface and take your hands completely off it.
Watch the readout for about fifteen seconds. Here's how to read what you see:
The indicator sits at dead centre and stays still. Your sticks are fine. The problem is elsewhere, so move to step 3.
It sits slightly off-centre but holds steady. That's a small, stable offset. Every stick produces a little sensor noise, and most games hide it with a built-in deadzone, so this may be completely harmless.
It sits off-centre and wanders on its own. That's textbook drift. The wandering is the giveaway, because it means the resting position is genuinely unstable, which is what worn contacts do.
It jumps or spikes erratically. Retest with a cable before concluding anything, since Bluetooth interference can cause jitter that looks like drift but isn't.
Write the number down. A before-and-after reading is the only reliable way to know whether a fix actually worked, rather than whether the controller merely feels better because you want it to.
While you're there, push each stick to the edge and let go, watching whether it snaps back cleanly. A stick that returns slowly or stops short has a mechanical problem rather than a sensor one, often debris or a tired centring spring.
Step 3: Rule out game settings
If your controller tested clean but your character still moves, the cause is in the game, not the hardware. A few things to check.
Deadzone set too low. The deadzone is a small zone around the stick's centre where the game ignores input. If a game's deadzone is set smaller than your stick's natural noise, that noise leaks through as movement. Raising it slightly fixes this instantly. To set it properly rather than guessing, measure your stick's resting value with a deadzone test and set the game's inner deadzone just above that figure. Going higher than necessary makes aiming feel sluggish, so nudge it up only until the drift disappears.
Auto-run or toggle sprint. Several games have a setting that keeps your character moving forward automatically, and some have accessibility options that do similar things. If your character walks forward specifically, rather than in a random direction, check for this before blaming hardware.
Motion or gyro controls. If your camera drifts rather than your character, and the movement responds to tilting the controller, gyro aiming is enabled. That's a setting, not a fault.
One game only. This is the clearest tell of all. If the problem happens in one game and nowhere else, including in a browser test, it's that game's configuration. Controllers don't develop game-specific faults.
If you're on PS5
A few PlayStation specifics worth knowing.
The DualSense has no system-wide deadzone setting, so adjustments have to be made per game, usually under aim or controller settings. Titles like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Apex Legends all expose sliders. If you own a DualSense Edge, you're better off: it has onboard deadzone and sensitivity profiles that apply everywhere.
Before anything else, try a reset. There's a small hole on the back of the controller next to the Sony logo. Press the recessed button inside with a paperclip for about five seconds, then reconnect by USB and press the PS button. Then update the controller firmware under Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Wireless Controller Device Software. Neither fixes worn hardware, but both are free, and drift that appeared suddenly rather than gradually is occasionally a software state rather than wear.
If you're on Xbox
Xbox controllers also have no system-wide deadzone for the standard pad, so it's per game again. Elite Series 2 owners get more: the Xbox Accessories app lets you set stick response curves per profile at the controller level, so one adjustment carries across games.
Two Xbox-specific things to rule out. First, weak batteries can produce odd input behaviour, so fit fresh ones before assuming the worst. Second, if you play on PC, test the controller with a USB cable, because wireless interference from routers or nearby USB 3.0 devices can cause jittery input that mimics drift. If the problem disappears when wired, your sticks are fine, and the connection was the issue.
Also update the controller firmware through Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories on console, or the Xbox Accessories app on PC.
How to fix genuine drift
If you've confirmed real drift, here's the order that makes sense.
Widen the deadzone as an immediate free workaround. It hides mild drift completely and can keep a controller perfectly playable for months. Understand that it masks the problem rather than curing it, since the wear underneath continues.
Blow out debris with compressed air. With the controller off, tilt the stick to one side to open the gap at its base and use short bursts of air while rotating the stick, keeping the can upright. Contamination causes a real share of drift, and if that's your cause, this is a permanent fix costing almost nothing.
Clean the contacts with a plastic-safe, quick-drying electronic contact cleaner. Lift the rubber skirt at the stick's base with a toothpick, apply one short spray underneath, work the stick in full circles for thirty seconds, then let it dry ten to fifteen minutes. Never use regular WD-40, which is a lubricant and will make things permanently worse. This is the fix that resolves most wear-based drift, typically buying anywhere from a couple of months to a year.
Use your warranty if you're still covered, and do it before attempting anything that involves opening the controller, since disassembly voids it.
Replace the sticks with Hall effect or TMR modules for a permanent cure. These sense position magnetically with no contacting parts, so there's nothing to wear and no dust to generate.
