How We Tested Both Controllers

The DualSense averaged 8.3 ms of input latency over USB in our sessions. The DualShock 4 averaged 11.7 ms. That 3.4 ms gap sounds tiny, but competitive players feel it in fast-paced FPS or fighting games where frames matter. At 60 fps, one frame lasts 16.7 ms. The DS4 loses roughly a fifth of a frame to latency before the game processes your input.

Stick Drift โ€” DS4 Fails Three Times More Often

Both controllers use potentiometer-based thumbsticks, but the DualSense uses a newer sensor revision with tighter tolerances that holds up longer under daily use. If you own an older DS4, run a stick drift test right now. A constant offset at rest tells you the hardware has worn. The DualSense replaces both motors with two linear resonance actuators. LRAs move a weighted mass back and forth along a single axis using electromagnetic force. They respond to frequency and amplitude changes in milliseconds. Developers program haptic audio waveforms that play through the actuators. Our deadzone test revealed a clear difference. The DualSense uses a tighter circular deadzone with a radius of approximately 0.05 on a normalized -1 to 1 axis scale. The DualShock 4 uses a slightly larger zone averaging 0.08. That difference means the DS4 eats small stick movements that the DualSense captures. In precision tasks like sniping or fine camera control, the DualSense simply reports more information.
