This is one of the most common hardware failures in computing, and it has a specific mechanical cause with a clear progression of fixes, from free software workarounds to a permanent repair. Here's how to confirm it's really a hardware fault, understand why it happens, and fix it.
First: test it properly
Before assuming anything, confirm the fault, because a couple of things imitate it.
Open a mouse test in your browser and click deliberately and slowly, one press at a time, watching whether each click registers once or twice. Do this twenty or thirty times on the affected button, since the fault is often intermittent early on and a handful of clicks may not catch it.

Why mice start double-clicking

The bounce becomes longer and more pronounced, until it eventually exceeds the debounce window. Once that happens, the extra bounces get through as genuine clicks, and your mouse double-clicks.
That's why the fault is progressive. It starts as an occasional annoyance and gradually worsens until the mouse is unusable for precise work.
Two things accelerate it. Gaming mice often ship with a very short debounce window to minimise click latency, which leaves less margin as the switch ages. And high-click-rate techniques burn through the switch's rated life dramatically faster than normal use.
Worth knowing: switches commonly rated for tens of millions of clicks frequently develop bounce well before reaching that figure, and heavy users often see it within one to two years. It's not necessarily a sign you did anything wrong.
Rule out settings first
Before opening anything, eliminate the non-hardware causes. These take a minute.
Windows double-click speed. Windows decides what counts as a deliberate double-click using a time threshold. If that's set very high, two intentional but slow clicks get merged into one double-click. Check Mouse settings and adjust the double-click speed slider.
Sticky or physically obstructed buttons. If the button feels tacky or doesn't spring back cleanly, debris may be causing a mechanical problem rather than an electrical one.
Software conflicts. Macro tools, remapping utilities, and some mouse vendor software can produce duplicate clicks. Close them and retest.
Try a different USB port or a different computer. If the fault follows the mouse to another machine, it's the mouse. If it doesn't, it's your system.
Fix 1: Increase the debounce time
The fastest workaround, and free if your mouse supports it.
Some gaming mice expose a debounce or click-delay setting in their configuration software; Logitech's G HUB and equivalents from other manufacturers often include this. Raising it slightly, to something in the region of 10 to 20ms, widens the window during which extra bounces are ignored, which masks an early-stage fault.
Be clear about what this does. It hides the symptom rather than curing it, and setting it too high risks the opposite problem: genuinely fast intentional clicks being swallowed. On a mouse used for fast repeated clicking, that trade-off is real, so raise it in small increments and test.

Fix 2: Compressed air
The cheapest hardware fix, and worth trying because contamination is sometimes the whole problem rather than wear.
Aim compressed air into the gap around the failing button while clicking rapidly, which helps work particles out of the switch. Keep the can upright so you don't spray liquid propellant inside.
Success rate here is modest, roughly a third of cases by some accounts, and it works far better on newer mice where dust rather than wear is the cause. If the mouse is several years old and heavily used, expect less. When it does work, the improvement is often temporary, since dust re-accumulates and any underlying wear continues progressing.
Fix 3: Clean the switch contacts
More effective than air, and the last fix before replacement. It requires opening the mouse on most models.
Use an electronic contact cleaner; DeoxIT D5 is the commonly recommended product. The key word is electronic: never use WD-40 or any general lubricant, which leaves residue that attracts dust and makes the problem permanently worse. Mouse screws are usually hidden under the glide pads on the underside, so you'll need to lift those carefully to keep them reusable. With the switch exposed, apply a small amount of contact cleaner and work it in by clicking the switch repeatedly, which drags the cleaner across the contact surfaces.
Some guides describe opening the switch housing itself and gently bending the metal contact leaf to restore spring tension. That can work, but the latches are fragile and easy to break, and a broken switch housing means a dead button rather than a bouncing one. Only attempt it if you're comfortable with fiddly work and accept the risk.
Cleaning clears oxidation and grit so the contacts can make and break cleanly again. It doesn't undo metal fatigue, so it's still a stopgap, but on a mouse that's only just started misbehaving, it commonly buys several months to a year.
Fix 4: Use the warranty
Before any soldering, check whether you're covered. Double-clicking is such a well-known failure mode that some manufacturers handle it routinely, and Logitech in particular has a well-established process for it.
If the mouse is in warranty, this is by far the best option: free, no risk, and often resolved by replacement. Opening the mouse yourself will void that coverage, so make this decision before you pick up a screwdriver.
Fix 5: Replace the switch
The permanent fix, and genuinely worthwhile on a mouse you like.
Replacement switches cost very little, often a few dollars for a pack, and the job takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes if you can solder. You open the mouse, desolder the failing switch from the circuit board, and solder in a replacement.
On switch choice, this is your opportunity to upgrade rather than replace like for like. Kailh GM 8.0, Huano, TTC Gold, and higher-grade Omron variants are all commonly recommended as more durable than the stock switches in many mice.
The main risk is lifting a PCB pad during desoldering, pulling the copper trace off the board, which leaves the button permanently dead. Use low heat and patience rather than force. Fix 6: Buy a mouse with optical switches
The way to never deal with this again.
Optical switches register a click by breaking an infrared light beam rather than by closing a metal contact. With no physical contacts to pit, oxidise, or lose tension, the double-click failure mode simply doesn't exist in them. Several manufacturers have moved to optical switches specifically because of how notorious this problem became.
If you're replacing the mouse anyway, buying one with optical switches, or a hot-swappable design that lets you change switches without soldering, turns a recurring repair project into a non-issue.
