Windows 11 still has a controller calibration wizard, but Microsoft has buried it so thoroughly that most people never find it. It lives in a Control Panel applet that predates Windows 10 and doesn't appear anywhere in the modern Settings app. This guide shows you exactly how to reach it, how to run it properly, and (just as important) when calibration will help and when it's the wrong tool entirely.
Set expectations first, because this saves disappointment: calibration fixes a stick whose center point or range is wrong. It does not fix worn hardware. If your stick is physically shedding carbon dust inside its potentiometer, no amount of software calibration cures that, though it can sometimes mask a small offset temporarily.
Before you calibrate: test first
Never calibrate blind. Run a baseline test so you know what you're actually correcting, and so you can tell afterward whether the wizard helped or made things worse.
Open the joystick calibration tool in your browser with the controller connected. Release both sticks and watch where they rest, then move each stick in slow full circles and note whether it tracks smoothly and reaches its full range in every direction. Write down the resting position.
You're looking for one of three patterns, and each points somewhere different:

The stick rests off-center, and the resting point wanders around on its own. That's drift from hardware wear, and calibration will help briefly at best. You'll recalibrate next week and the week after.
The stick rests fine but can't reach the corners or maxes out early. That's range wear, which calibration can partially compensate for by remapping the usable range.
Method 1: The Windows calibration wizard (joy.cpl)
Here's the part nobody can find. The calibration wizard lives in the old Game Controllers control panel.
Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, type joy.cpl, and press Enter. The Game Controllers window opens, listing every connected controller. You can also press Windows + S and search "Set up USB game controllers," which opens the same panel.
Select your controller from the list and click Properties. You'll see a Test tab and, on supported devices, a Settings tab. Open the Settings tab and click Calibrate to launch the wizard.
The wizard walks you through three stages. First, it asks you to find the center point: leave the stick alone, don't touch it, and click Next. This is the step that actually matters, and people ruin it by resting a thumb on the stick. Second, it asks you to move the stick through its full range in complete circles, so Windows learns the outer limits; be thorough here and reach every corner. Third, it confirms the center again. Click Finish to save.
Then go back to the Test tab and check your work. The crosshair should sit at center untouched, buttons should read as off, and triggers should sit at minimum. If it looks right, you're done.
The big caveat: Xbox controllers usually can't use this
Here's a detail most guides skip, and it explains a lot of frustration. If you open Properties on an Xbox controller and see only a Test tab with no Settings tab or Calibrate button, that's not a bug. Xbox controllers rely on their own firmware and driver behavior rather than exposing Windows' calibration controls, so the wizard simply isn't available for them.
The wizard works best with DirectInput-style devices: flight sticks, racing wheels, generic USB gamepads, and many third-party controllers. For an Xbox pad, your calibration options are firmware updates, the Xbox Accessories app, and Steam Input instead. Method 2: Steam Input calibration
Steam has its own controller layer, and for a lot of people it's the more useful calibration path, especially since it works with controllers the Windows wizard ignores.
Open Steam, go to Settings > Controller, and make sure support is enabled for your controller type. Steam exposes deadzone and stick behavior settings per controller and per game, so you can correct for a small offset in the games that matter without touching anything system-wide.
Steam Input's advantage is that it applies where you actually play. Its limitation is the flip side: it only applies to games launched through Steam. Games from Epic, GOG, or standalone installers don't get it unless you add them to Steam as non-Steam shortcuts.
Method 3: Adjust deadzones instead
Sometimes the honest answer is that you don't need calibration; you need a slightly larger deadzone. If your stick rests just barely off center and everything else is fine, widening the deadzone in a game's settings hides the offset instantly with no wizard involved.
Measure your stick's resting value on a deadzone test first, then set the game's inner deadzone just above that number. Don't go higher than necessary, because every extra point of deadzone throws away small stick movements and makes aiming feel mushy. This is a workaround rather than a correction, but for a mild offset it's faster and less risky than calibration, and it doesn't touch your system configuration.
When calibration makes things worse
This happens more than you'd expect, and it's usually recoverable.
If the stick center is worse after calibration, you almost certainly touched the stick during the center-detection step, teaching Windows that "center" is wherever your thumb was holding it. Reset to default, then rerun the wizard without touching anything.
If a trigger now shows input when untouched, the same thing happened with the trigger: it wasn't fully released during calibration.
To reset, open joy.cpl, select the controller, choose Properties, and look for a reset option under the Settings tab to clear the saved calibration profile. Unplug and reconnect the controller afterward (or power-cycle it if wireless), then retest before trying again.
One specific trap: if you calibrated through an adapter or a hub, reset it while connected the same way, then reconnect directly by USB and test again. Calibration data can be tied to how the device presents itself, so a profile learned through an adapter can behave oddly when you plug in directly.
And if only one game feels wrong while everything else is fine, don't calibrate at all. Reset Windows calibration and go check that game's own deadzone and sensitivity settings, because the problem is in the game, not your controller.
When calibration isn't the answer
Calibration is a software correction, so it can't repair hardware. If you recalibrate and the drift returns within days, if the resting point moves on its own from minute to minute, or if the stick physically feels loose or gritty, you're looking at wear, and the fix is cleaning or replacing the stick module. A few other things worth ruling out before you blame calibration. A wireless controller with a low battery can produce jittery input that looks like a calibration problem, so charge it or fit fresh batteries and retest wired if you can. Stale ghost devices from controllers you connected years ago can also interfere, and a clean reconnect on a different USB port sometimes resolves oddities that no wizard will. Recalibrate after updates
Worth knowing: Windows updates, driver updates, and controller firmware updates can all disturb calibration. If a controller that was fine suddenly feels off right after an update, that's your likely cause, and rerunning the wizard (or resetting to default) usually restores it. There's no need to recalibrate on a schedule; do it when something actually changes.
