The DualShock 3 is old enough to drive. Controllers that shipped in 2007 and 2008 are now well past the point where their batteries, sticks, and charge ports fail on schedule, and Sony stopped caring about them a long time ago. The upside is that the DS3 is one of the most repairable controllers ever made: five Phillips screws, no glue, no security bits, and a battery that unplugs. For stick work, you'll want a plastic-safe, quick-drying electronic contact cleaner, and for port work, a soldering iron with a fine tip.
Parts depend on the fault: a LIP1359 battery pack (roughly $8 to $15), a replacement mini-USB port, or a replacement stick module.
Opening a DualShock 3
Every repair below starts here, so get this right once.
Remove the five Phillips screws from the back of the controller. They're all the same length, so you don't need to track which came from where.
Now the part that catches people. Press on the rear cover between the two analog sticks and slightly lift the lower edge away from the rest of the controller. Then push the rear cover gently toward the top edge to clear the front edge of the L2 and R2 triggers, and pull it away. Go slowly here, because the triggers are held in place by the shell and will pop off and fly across the room if you rush. Some controllers also have plastic clips, so if you feel resistance, look before you force it.
With the back off, you'll see the battery sitting near the bottom edge, connected to the mainboard by a small white 2-pin JST connector. Nothing is glued. That's the whole reason the DS3 is a pleasant repair.
Fix 1: The battery (start here, it's usually this)
If your DS3 won't turn on, won't hold a charge, or dies after twenty minutes, the battery is almost certainly finished. Original LIP1359 packs are pushing 15 to 18 years old, and lithium cells lose capacity predictably whether you use them or not. Controllers stored in a drawer are often worse off than ones in daily use, because a cell left to self-discharge below roughly 2.5V is usually unrecoverable.
The swap is genuinely easy. Open the controller as above, lift the battery off the board for clearance, and carefully pull the JST connector away from its socket. Pull on the connector body, not the wires, and tweezers help for the first disconnection since it's snug. Plug the new pack in, seat it in the same spot, and reassemble.
A real warning about buying replacements, because the DS3 battery market is full of junk. Capacity ratings on LIP1359 replacements vary wildly between listings, and inflated claims are the clearest counterfeit red flag: packs advertising dramatically higher capacity than the original in the same physical footprint are not delivering it. Physics doesn't bend for eBay. Buy from a reputable seller, be suspicious of anything claiming a big capacity jump, and prefer listings with a real review history. A cheap fake will die inside a few months, and you'll be doing this again.

Fix 2: Stick drift
The DS3's analog sticks are potentiometer modules, which means they wear the same way every other controller of that era did: a contact scrapes across a resistive track, the track sheds conductive dust, and eventually the stick reports movement you aren't making.
Confirm it first rather than assuming. Connect the controller and run a stick drift test, then let go of both sticks and read where they rest. A healthy stick sits at center; a drifting one rests off-center or wanders. Note the number so you can tell whether your fix worked.
Cleaning is the fix that works most of the time and requires no soldering. With the controller off, lift the rubber skirt at the base of the drifting stick with a toothpick, apply one short burst of electronic contact cleaner underneath, then rotate the stick through full circles for about 30 seconds to spread it across the contacts. Let it dry 10 to 15 minutes before powering on. Use a plastic-safe, quick-drying electronic contact cleaner and never regular WD-40, which is a lubricant and will make the problem permanent.
Expect a few months to a year of relief, less each time you reapply as the wear advances. When you're respraying every couple of weeks, the module is done.
Here's the honest limitation on the DS3 specifically: the sticks are soldered to the mainboard, so replacement means desoldering and resoldering. And unlike modern controllers, drop-in Hall effect upgrades for the DS3 are thin on the ground, since the aftermarket has moved on to current-gen pads. Your realistic options are a like-for-like potentiometer module (which will eventually drift again) or, frankly, cleaning it periodically and accepting that. Given that working used DS3s sell cheaply, a stick replacement on a DS3 is a project you do because you enjoy it or because it's a controller you're attached to, not because the economics demand it.
Fix 3: Sticky or unresponsive buttons
DS3 buttons fail in two ways, and they're worth separating.
Sticky or mushy buttons are usually contamination. Years of skin oil, dust, and whatever was on your hands work under the buttons and gum up the silicone membrane. Open the controller, remove the button pads and the silicone membranes underneath, and clean both the membrane's conductive pads and the carbon contact pads on the board with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Let everything dry completely before reassembly. This resolves the majority of button complaints and costs nothing.
Dead buttons that don't register at all are usually worn conductive pads. The black conductive material on the underside of the silicone membrane wears through with use, so the contact no longer completes the circuit. Cleaning won't restore worn-through pads. Replacement membranes are cheap and widely available, and conductive repair paint exists as a middle option, though it's fiddly and results vary.
A DS3-specific wrinkle: the face buttons are pressure-sensitive, reporting how hard you press rather than just on or off. That's a nice feature almost no game uses, but it means a partially worn contact can produce weird half-registered inputs rather than a clean failure. If a button feels like it works sometimes or registers weakly, worn pads are the likely cause even though the button isn't fully dead.
After any button work, verify everything with a button test rather than pressing buttons in a menu and hoping. It takes thirty seconds and catches the one you didn't reseat properly.
Fix 4: The mini-USB port
The DS3 uses a mini-USB port, not micro-USB and certainly not USB-C, which tells you how old it is. It's also the DS3's most common physical failure. Years of cables being yanked sideways lift the port's solder pads off the board, and once that happens, the controller won't charge and won't sync over cable.
Diagnose before you open anything. If the controller charges from a different cable or a different power source, the port is fine and your cable was the problem. Mini-USB cables of this vintage are often worn out themselves. If wiggling the cable makes charging start and stop, that's a loose port and you've found your fault.
The repair is a real soldering job. The port is surface-mounted with fine pins plus mechanical anchor tabs, and if the pads have torn away from the board you're into pad repair with jumper wires, which is genuinely difficult work. This is the one DS3 repair I'd steer most people away from attempting as a first soldering project. A donor controller from a used bin is often cheaper and faster than a port repair.

Fix 5: Won't connect or lights keep blinking
Before assuming hardware, try the reset. There's a small hole on the back of the controller near the L2 trigger with a recessed button inside; press it with a paperclip for a few seconds. Then plug the controller into a powered-on PS3 with a mini-USB cable and press the PS button, which re-registers it to that console.
That last part matters and trips people up constantly: the DS3 pairs over USB, not wirelessly. A controller that's been used on another PS3 (or on a PC) has to be plugged in to re-register before it will work wirelessly again. Four blinking lights that never settle usually mean exactly this, not a fault.
If it only works while plugged in and dies the moment you unplug, that's the battery, so go back to Fix 1.
Using a DS3 on PC
Worth a brief note since it's why many people are reviving these. The DS3 predates the era when controllers just worked on Windows, and it has no native support. You'll need third-party drivers, and the old standby ScpToolkit is long unmaintained. The actively developed option is DsHidMini, which is what most people use in 2026. Expect setup to take some patience; this isn't plug-and-play like a modern pad.
Is it worth repairing?
Honestly, it depends on the fault. A battery swap is $10 and twenty minutes, and it revives a controller completely, so that's always worth doing. Button cleaning is free and effective. Stick cleaning is cheap and buys real time. Those three cover most DS3 failures and all of them are worth your afternoon.
A mini-USB port repair or a soldered stick replacement is a different calculation. Both are hours of fiddly soldering on a controller you can replace used for very little, so do those because you want to, not because it's the efficient path. The DS3 is a lovely thing to repair, and that's a legitimate reason on its own.
