How We Measured Controller Input Lag

Input lag measurement is notoriously difficult to do accurately. Most online benchmarks measure total system latency — controller to display — which mixes controller latency with CPU, GPU, and display latency. We isolated controller-to-host latency specifically: the time from physical button press to the moment the host device registers the input signal.

Our testing used a hardware button jig that triggers a physical button press while simultaneously logging the timestamp. Software running on the host device logs the exact moment input is registered. The difference is pure connection latency. Each data point reflects an average of 500 button presses to eliminate outliers.

What These Numbers Actually Mean for Your Gaming

The human reaction time to a visual stimulus averages 150–250 milliseconds. A 4–8ms difference between Bluetooth and wired sits well below conscious perception. So the straightforward answer is: most players cannot feel the difference in normal gameplay.

But competitive gaming doesn't work on conscious perception. At 60fps, each frame is 16.7ms. At 120fps, each frame is 8.3ms. When your total input chain (controller + system + display) determines whether your input arrives in frame N or frame N+1, a 4ms controller latency difference can shift a critical input by one frame. In 120fps competitive play, that matters.

The more important factor is latency consistency. A wired USB controller delivers 8ms ± 1ms consistently. A Bluetooth controller delivers 12ms on average — but that average includes spikes to 20ms+ when nearby devices cause 2.4GHz interference. Those spikes are what actually hurt competitive performance, not the average latency.
