What a controller tester should actually do
Before comparing tools, it's worth knowing what to look for, because most people only use a fraction of what these tools offer.
Stick position readout with numeric values. Visual dots are fine for a quick look, but you need actual numbers to record a baseline and compare over time. This is the single most useful capability, because drift is progressive and a recorded value from six months ago is what tells you it's getting worse.
Button state display. Every button, showing pressed and released clearly.
Analog trigger values. Triggers aren't binary â you need the 0 to 1 range to spot a trigger that doesn't return to zero or can't reach maximum.
Drift-specific testing. A dedicated resting-position readout, ideally with enough precision to catch small offsets.
Deadzone visualisation. Helps you set in-game deadzones from a measurement rather than a guess.
Vibration testing. Fires the motors so you can confirm both sides work.
Gyro/motion readout. Increasingly relevant as gyro aiming becomes mainstream.
Latency measurement. Useful comparatively rather than absolutely.
The browser limitation nobody's tool can fix
This matters before any comparison, because it causes people to blame tools for failures that aren't theirs.
Browser controller testers all read your controller through the Gamepad API, which is a web standard rather than something any individual site implements from scratch. That means the ceiling on what any of these tools can do is set by your browser, not by the developer.
The specific limitations:
Safari does not support the vibration API. So a rumble test that fails in Safari â on any site, including ours â tells you nothing about your controller's motors. This trips up iPhone and Mac users constantly. Installing another browser on iOS doesn't help, since all iOS browsers use Apple's underlying engine.
Browser polling is not lab-grade. Chromium browsers poll the Gamepad API at roughly 16ms intervals, and the JavaScript engine adds a few milliseconds. Any latency figure from a browser tool is comparative rather than absolute â the difference between your wired and Bluetooth runs is meaningful; the raw millisecond number is not a laboratory measurement. Any tool claiming otherwise is overselling.
Gyro support varies by browser and controller. Not all combinations expose motion data.
So when comparing tools, judge them on interface quality, the depth of what they present, and whether they explain these limits honestly â not on capabilities no browser tool can have.

Hardwaretester is the most established name in this space and the one most people search for by name. It's simple, fast, and does the core job without friction. For someone who wants to check a button works and nothing more, its simplicity is a feature rather than a limitation.
Specialist tools exist for specific hardware â fight stick testers, flight stick and wheel utilities â that handle those devices better than any general-purpose gamepad tester will, because they're built around those devices' unusual axis and button counts.

Which tool to use for which job
Practical routing, including to competitors where they're the better answer.
Quick "is this button working" check. Any of them. Use whichever loads fastest. This genuinely doesn't need a comparison.
Diagnosing drift and recording a baseline. You want a tool with numeric resting values you can write down, not just a visual dot. Our stick drift test is built for this, and the important habit is recording the number with the date rather than which tool you use.
Setting in-game deadzones. You need the measured resting value to set your deadzone just above it. A dedicated deadzone test is the right tool.

Testing on a phone. Check mobile formatting â many testers are desktop-first and awkward on a phone.
Testing vibration. Any tool works, but use Chrome or Edge, not Safari. This is a browser constraint, not a tool difference.
Checking latency. Use any tool comparatively â test wired, then Bluetooth, on the same machine in the same session. Treat the absolute numbers with scepticism regardless of source.
How to test properly, whichever tool you pick
The method matters more than the tool, and most people get this wrong in the same three ways.
Test wired where possible. Bluetooth interference produces jitter that looks like hardware faults. A USB connection gives you a clean baseline.
Use Chrome or Edge. Broadest API support, and it removes Safari's vibration limitation from the equation.
Press a button first. Browsers don't expose a gamepad until it sends input, so a blank page usually means the controller hasn't been woken rather than that it's broken.
Take your hands completely off for drift testing. Resting a thumb on a stick invalidates the reading entirely, and it's the most common testing error.
Record your numbers with the date. This is the single highest-value habit in controller testing, and almost nobody does it. Drift is progressive, and a baseline from six months ago is what turns "it feels a bit off" into a documented warranty claim.
Retest after every repair. Before-and-after numbers are the only way to know a fix worked rather than hoping it did.
The honest summary
For most people, the difference between these tools is smaller than the difference between testing properly and testing badly. Any of them will show you a stuck button or an obviously drifting stick. Where they diverge is in depth: whether you get numeric values you can record, whether the deadzone and latency tools exist, and whether the site explains what the numbers mean.
